35-year-old Sumit Sinha working with an IT company said, “Kothrud is not very far from Pune railway junction. We reached SNDT College, where the diversion starts, at 4.15 pm and it takes 35 to 40 minutes to clear the area. Due to heavy traffic we reached station at 5.35 to 5.40 pm. The train had already departed.”

PUNE: Traffic congestion and diversion due to Metro work in the city, coupled with heavy rains, is making it difficult for passengers to reach the airport or railway station on time. Many have complained of missing their flights or trains.

Vehicles coming from Kothrud, Karve Nagar and going towards Deccan Gymkhana have to take a diversion via SNDT College. All vehicles have to move from that diversion while going towards  Nal Stop, which means spending 30 to 45 minutes on the road during the peak hours.

On Wednesday, a Pune-based family missed Jhelum Express that departs from Pune at 5.20 pm. They were at SNDT College at 4.15 pm, but got caught in traffic congestion.

Talking about the jam at Nal Stop on Karve Road, he added, “Pune Metro work is going on. And due to rains, sometimes there is a jam as vehicles move slowly, as there is single lane there.”
A similar situation was faced by air fliers who missed the flight due to a heavy traffic jam at 509 Chowk near Pune Airport.

Jhanvi Vegad tweeted, “I and six fellow passengers reached 30 minutes prior to departure due to traffic just outside at Pune airport. Pune has this issue of single lane traffic just outside the airport. Every day 50s of passengers reach late due to that....” (sic).

DCP (Traffic) Pankaj Deshmukh told Sakal Times, “There was no major jam at 509 Chowk (Vishrantwadi to Airport Road) on Thursday. Though there was rain, there was no major queue of vehicles there.”
