PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Standing Committee has decided to form a medical trust on the lines of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to start the corporation’s own medical college named after late Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

During a Standing Committee meeting held on Tuesday, a decision was taken on the basis of the feasibility report submitted by a private consultant. The consultant was appointed by the civic administration. The consultant estimated that the project cost will be Rs 622 crore and suggested three options to start and operate PMC’s medical college.

While speaking to media, Standing Committee Chairman Sunil Kamble, said, “Out of three options, we have decided to accept the AMC pattern to form a trust. The PMC will construct a medical college and it will be run on the students’ admission fees. In this trust, municipal commissioner, mayor, leader of the house, opposition party leaders, PMC’s chief medical officer etc will be appointed as trustees. The PMC has set a target of three years to construct this college.”

He further said, “PMC officials along with Mayor will visit Ahmedabad to know more about medical college which is being run by the trust.” Under the AMC option, PMC will have to form a medical trust. As per this option, AMC had formed the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Medical Education Trust in 2008. This trust was created to run the facility to reduce the financial and managerial burden on the AMC. It is a self-reliant entity, but a not for profit organisation with no direct financial burden on the AMC. Under this option, the PMC will have to construct a college and a hospital. After the construction, it will be operated like any other private

medical college.
