Pune: After opening the Neighbourly app for users in Bengaluru and New Delhi, Google announced the expansion of this new app to Pune. The app helps people source local information from their neighbours. With over 1.5 million downloads and half a million people on the waitlist, Google is rolling out Neighbourly nationally.

Google’s Next Billion Users team said that since the beta launch in Mumbai, people from Pune have shown wide interest in bringing Neighbourly to their city. The officials shared that people from neigbourhoods like Wakad, Kothrud, Hinjewadi were eager to ask their neighbours for commute recommendations, parking queries and where to get help preparing for interviews and exams.

Earlier this week, Neighbourly app was made available for users in Chennai and Hyderabad. Over the next few weeks, more cities will be added.

Ben Fohner, Senior Product Manager on Google’s Next Billion Users team said, “We are committed to making it more useful for a billion Indians who speak in local Indian languages. We want to fill the hyper-local information gap that exists today and that’s why we launched Neighbourly earlier this year.

In our research, we’ve found that most of life happens within 1-km radius of where you live. We’ve also found that when finding local information, people prefer to ask or discuss with another person.

Neighbourly makes it easy to seek advice and recommendations from neighbours who know the area and have similar tastes. That’s why we built Neighbourly, that’s why people use it, and that’s why we’re so excited to make it available to everybody across India.”

The Neighbourly app made inroads in popular neighbourhoods in Mumbai first, followed by Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mysore, Vizag, Kochi and Coimbatore.

Users can join their neighbourhood with a tap and they will get automatic suggestions on the nearest neighbourhood and they willl also have an option to switch between multiple neighbourhoods.

The Google team claimed that people are integrating Neighbourly into their daily routines, asking just about anything from the source of a strong LPG smell to why there are elephants on the street
outside.

The Neighbourly app is available on the Google Play Store for all smartphones running Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) and higher.

Neighbourly will be live for users across India in the next few days.
