MahaMetro to introduce single mobility card
The card will include metro, rail and road services, including Ola and Uber
PUNE: MahaMetro is working on single mobility card which will not only cover metro railway, but also Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), cycle service, pay and park, railways, as well as app-based cab aggregators like Ola and Uber.
Executive Director of MahaMetro Ramanathan Subramanyam told Sakal Times, “We have prepared a single mobility card in Nagpur along with SBI. It is not operational yet. We will introduce the card to commuters after the metro will start operating in the city,” he said.
Subramanyam added that based on this, they are looking to introduce single card for all road transport modes in Pune. “We are also working to include private transport operators and railway services as well,” he said.
“In single mobility card, a commuter can pay all fare or charges through one card from Metro ticket to parking charges. The card will be based on Open Loop Technology. We are also going to develop an application which will show all available options of transportation to commuters on their mobile phones. MahaMetro will provide feeder service to commuters to reach the metro station,” he added.
HOW DOES THE MOBILITY CARD WORK?
- The contactless smart card used by commuters in metro rail will have a magnetic strip in which data like station code and amount recharged can be stored.
- When placed at the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gate while entering a station, the station code is encrypted in the card.
- While exiting the readers installed on the AFC gate calculates the distance travelled and deducts the money.
- Similarly, card readers are there in electronic ticketing machines used at metro station parking lots and PMPML buses, rent on cycle, railway ticket, etc.
